Growing up, “an old soul,” I always knew I’d hit my stride in my 30s.
During my high school years, I’d much rather spend a Friday night at the cafeteria planning the next pep rally than going out. (Class of 2004, remember “Let’s Make A Deal,” complete with shower curtains concealing the football team captain & fabulous prizes like a personal stereo system?!)
In college, at the University of Minnesota, I lived to intern. The Minnesota Timberwolves gave me a shot in their PR department after I emailed, called, and sent carrier pigeons pleading my case. Media planning & grabbing the mic to warm up Target Center- a match made in heaven.
The Disney Company wasn’t a shabby experience either! After completing six months at the Disney Institute and as a Walt Disney World cast member, I was offered a position on the Fairy Tale Weddings team. It was 2007, the year Disney resorts began marrying LGBTQ+ couples- a monumental time in history- I was elated. Oprah’s production team had even been there the week prior spotlighting the progressive, world-class events. Sadly, I’d have to leave my studies as only a junior, so I declined the position.
Funny how we get busy making plans, and God laughs. 2020, for instance! I like to think no matter what may occur that we don’t understand, it is only being orchestrated to provide a more direct path to our heart’s deepest desires.
I never dreamed straight out of college graduation I’d become the mother of two children before getting married or even engaged. Again, all part of the greater plan- the greatest plan. The plan I could never have planned.
A few months ago, I began my studies at Harvard. The midwestern girl with boundless ambition and a big open mind, reminding herself once again that the future belongs to those who dream.
Please allow yourself to dream and be brave in your life, so others, like your children, can be brave and bold in theirs.
With Love,
Jessica
